A member in the FPGeeks Forum has made a discovery that will add a little convenience to Montblanc owners moving forward. It appears the nib unit has been redesigned to easily allow changing nibs.
Old nib unit design with the infamous pink thread sealant.
New nib unit design. Notice the gasket near the threads.
Previously, a tool was required to unscrew the nib unit and a special sealant was used on the threads. If a nib had been removed then it required a new application of the sealant before being put back in the pen. It appears there are still two notches in the nib unit where a tool would be interested, but due to the use a gasket instead of a thread sealant, removing the nib by hand seems easy to do.
We do know that the JFK and 90th Anniversary 149 feature this new nib unit so the change has recently been implemented. Some dealers have reported that they’ve had to send in their stock of the 90th Anniv. 149s to have the new nib units swapped in, which means these should be able to be retrofit into older pens.
